India’s Overall Exports Decline
 
Exports of gems & jewellery during April 2008- February '2009 as compared to last year
 

The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council has published figures of exports from April 08 to February 09 which show an overall decline as compare to the same period last year.

February
The overall exports of gems & Jewellery at US$ 1221.43 (rupees 5911.74 crores) million in month of February 2009 is showing a decline of 34.57% (-19.11% rupees term) as compared to US$ 1866.74 (rupees 7308.30 crores) million of same period previous year.

For the manufacturing export, the decline at 45.74% in dollar terms in month of February 09 when compared to same period last year. In rupee terms there is a decline of 33.32% in net manufacturing exports during this fiscal.

April 08 to February 09
The overall exports of gems & Jewellery at US$ 17791.40 (rupees 79403 crores) million is showing a decline of 4.62% (+5.65% rupees term) as compared to US$ 18653.63(rupees 75155.46 crores) million of same period previous year.

For the manufacturing export, the decline at 17.88% in dollar terms in this fiscal of April 08 – February 09 when compared to same period last year. In rupee terms there is a decline of 9.40% in net manufacturing exports during this fiscal.

Cut & Polished Diamonds February 09
The overall export of Cut & Polished diamonds at of US$ 872.92 (Rupees 4224.94 crores) million in month of February 2009 is showing a decline of 34.87% (-19.48% rupees term) as compared to US$ 1340.20 (rupees 5246.89 crores) million for the same period of previous year.

As per GJEPC’ s statistics, during February 09, the exports & imports of cut & polished diamonds stood at Rs 4224.94 crores and Rs 2521.65 Crores respectively as compared to Rs 5246.89 Crores and Rs 2224.18 Crores respectively during period of the previous year. The figures show that trade of cut & polished diamonds due to manufacturing activities have shown a decline of 43.65% in rupee terms as compared to the same period last year.

April 08 to February 09
The overall export of Cut & Polished diamonds at of US$ 11876.45 (Rupees 53004.59 crores) million is showing a decline of 6.39%(+3.69% rupees term) as compared to US$ 12687.19 ( rupees 51116.67 crores) million for the same period of previous year.

Imports of rough diamonds at US$ 7249.39 (Rupees 32839.73 crores) million in April 08 – February 09 have shown a decline of dollar term 20.12 %(11.31 % rupee term) compared with the imports at US$ 9075.36 (Rupees 37027.47 crores) million for April 07 – February 08.

Rise in export turnovers attributable to trading activity: The marginal growth in exports of cut & polished diamonds in the year 2008-09 from the corresponding period of last year is due to increase in the trading activities of cut & polished diamonds, which has arisen due to the reduction of import duty on cut and polished diamonds and other inputs. GJEPC’ s statistics, during April 08 – February 09, the exports & imports of cut & polished diamonds stood at Rs 53004.59 crores and Rs 28785.70 Crores respectively as compared to Rs 51116.67 Crores and Rs 19284.04 Crores respectively during period of the previous year. The figures show that trade of cut & polished diamonds due to manufacturing activities have shown a decline of 23.92% in rupee terms as compared to the same period last year.

Gold Jewellery
Provisional export of gold jewellery for the period April 08 – February 09 at US$ 4764.68 (rupees 21264.75 crores) million shows decline of 4.85% (growth of 5.40% rupee term) over the comparative figure of US$ 5007.32(rupess 20174.51 crores ) million for April 08 – February 08.

Coloured Gemstones
Export of Coloured Gemstones at US$ 248.09(in Rupees 1107.22 crores) million shows a growth of 1.00% (11.88% in rupee term) during April 08 –February 09 as compared to US$ 245.63 (rupees 989.65 crores) million in April 07- February 08. Kindly note that the data pertaining to DGCI&S is not available for April 08 – February 09 and as such, comparison is done only for figures available with Council.
