Orb thistle drop earrings by Sotheby's Diamonds

Part of The Thistle Collection from Sotheby’s Diamonds, a spotlight on the ingenuity and innovation of contemporary craftsmanship. State-of-the-art diamond setting becomes an integral part of the design in this series of vivaciously modern jewels.

Sculptural, architectural, graphic forms are built up through the skillful application of reverse setting, the diamonds set upside down, in lush abundance. This technique, adapted from watchmaking, was introduced by Sotheby’s Diamonds to create contrast with and draw attention to a magnificent center stone, while reinventing the classic cluster design.

Centering two round brilliant-cut diamonds within a contrasting blackened gold setting, surrounded by reverse-set white diamonds in 18 karat white gold, round diamonds weighing 6.04 carats and tan is of US$ 380,000.

The dramatic show of glinting fragments of light generated by the reverse-set diamonds creates contrasting texture, sheen and scintillating brilliance, their sharpness offset by the sensual roundness of the silhouettes and center stones, altogether creating dynamic visual excitement.

Here too are powerful echoes of the natural octahedral shape of the diamond crystal, composed of two pyramids, the mystical form sacred to the ancients, a sign of the divine. A dramatic light show. Sotheby’s Diamonds is a pioneering venture that brings together the most exceptional and desirable diamonds, cutting-edge design and superlative craftsmanship in a very modern, forward-looking house. It links the entire complex chain of supply and creation.
